A design registration provides protection for the appearance of a product and can protect the shape and configuration and /or an ornamental pattern applied to a product.

New design law commenced in Australia on 17 June 2004. By registration and certification under the new law, you will be granted the exclusive right to use, make, and sell products under your design for a period of up to ten years. For designs registerd under the old design law, the maximum term is sixteen years.
